Drayton's history is long for a Toowoomba suburb. The Royal Bull's Head Inn was first built in 1847 and 1848, its current structure was substantially complete by 1858, and the National Trust bought it in 1973 and began restoring it in 1976. The Darling Downs Gazette, the area's first newspaper, appeared in Drayton in 1858, and the author Steele Rudd was born there in 1868. At the 2021 Census Drayton had 1,813 residents.
